This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, December 23rd.

The immature BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was still present at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County on December 23rd. It has been seen at the western outlet near I-35W along Black Dog Road but it has been seen at the eastern inlet as well. At least one ICELAND GULL and a few GLAUCOUS GULLS can also be found at Black Dog Lake. And Karl Bardon found an Iceland Gull on December 16th on the Mississippi River at Hardman Avenue in St. Paul. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was also in the area.

Ed Duerksen and Lester Rupp reported a GYRFALCON from a mile northeast of Pierce Lake in Martin County on the 17th, and I have a secondhand report of one being seen west of Black Dog Lake on the same day.

Two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were relocated in the Sax-Zim bog along the Stone Lake Road on the 17th. Kim Risen found a Northern Hawk Owl on 420th Street southwest of Tamarack in Aitkin County on the 22nd.

A Snowy Owl was spotted by Leslie Kottke in Ramsey County on East River Road at Franklin Avenue on December 16th. Another was seen by Beth and Ben Hamel on the 16th on roof of a house in the 1770s block of Scheffer Ave. in St. Paul's Highland Park neighborhood. The Snowy

Owl at Minneapolis / St. Paul airport is still being reported from Cargo Road and two birds may be present here. On the 18th, Jen Vieth

saw a Snowy Owl on Goodhue County Road 7 about a mile northwest of Ryan and another was seen about two miles west of Bellechester. Herb Dingmann reported one on the 18th near the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Morrison County. This bird was near the intersection of County Road 35 and Inca Road. A Snowy Owl was seen just south of Tamarack in eastern Aitkin County on the 19th. Warren Lind found a Snowy Owl along state highway 61 at the junction of Lake

County Road 3.

On the 17th, Karen Sussman found a SPRUCE GROUSE near Virginia, St. Louis County. It was on county road 810 south of Gilbert.

Joel and Lisa Swanstrom reported a pair of TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES on

the 23rd at Ann Lake in Sherburne County. Park at the entrance of the

unplowed road that goes to the Ann Lake campground and walk up to where the cross country ski trail crossed this road. The birds were on this trail about 100 feet north of the road.

A male VARIED THRUSH has been visiting the feeders of Lisa Schleisman

at 440 Riverside Avenue South in Sartell, Stearns County, since the 11th. The feeder is adjacent to the driveway and visitors are welcome

to park in the driveway to observe.
