This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday May 2nd sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
EARED GREBES were on the St. Francis Water Impoundment at the Sherburne NWR in Sherburne County on April 27th. Somewhat unusual was the COMMON RAVEN seen there on the same day by members of the St. Paul Audubon Society.
The first SORA of the year was discovered at the Old Cedar Ave. Bridge in Hennepin County on the 27.
Six CATTLE EGRETS were seen by Al Batt, eight miles south of the town of Albert Lea in Freeborn County. Two CATTLE EGRETS were in Houston County at the junction of highways 26 and 16 near La Crescent. Another report of CATTLE EGRET comes from the west side of highway 61, just south of the I- 694 intersection in Ramsey County on April 27th.
In Lac Qui Parle County, a CATTLE EGRET plus four SNOWY EGRETS were in a marshy area just south of the town of Odessa also on April 27th. The birds were on County Road 15, one mile south of highway 7. At nearby Salt Lake a CINNAMON TEAL plus several AMERICAN AVOCETS and a few WILLETS were found, and WILLETS were also on Thielke Lake in Big Stone County, and they were at Carlos Avery Wildlife Refuge in Anoka County. UPLAND SANDPIPERS were reported from Lac Qui Parle, Big Stone and Mille Lacs County. A good shorebird location is the Renville sugar beet ponds in Renville County. Birds reported from here include both YELLOWLEGS, WILLETS, DUNLIN, SANDERLING, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.
Three SWAINSON'S HAWKS were seen migrating through Cottage Grove in Washington County on April 27, and SWAINSON'S HAWKS were in in Lac Qui Parle County on the same day.
SHORT-EARED OWLS were also seen in Lac Qui Parle County. They were on the Nature Conservancy tracts north and west of the town of Lewisberg from April 27th through the 30th.
Mike Hendrickson called to report that a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was at Sibley State Park in Kandiyohi County on the 26th. This is the third consecutive year that this normally Casual species has been seen here. Look in the picnic area directly west of the swimming beach. Other recent warbler arrivals from around the state include BLACK-AND-WHITE, PALM, and NORTHERN PARULA.
Other reported spring migrants HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, FORSTER'S TERN, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, BROWN THRASHER, SOLITARY VIREO, SWAMP and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a LECONTE'S SPARROW was at the George Haun Reserve in St. Louis Park on April 28.
