This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday November 20th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
That BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still at the Blue Lake treatment plant in Scott County. Blaine Seeliger reported it there as recently as November 19th. Four OLDSQUAWS were seen on Lake Winnibigoshish in both Cass and Itasca counties on November 16th. Three were at the public access on the southwest side of the lake in Cass County, and the fourth was seen at the Lake Winnibigoshish campground in Itasca County. Another OLDSQUAW was seen on the 17th on Lake Mille Lacs in Mille Lacs County at Sha Bosh Kung Bay which is on the southwest side of the lake.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was reported by Val Cunningham on November 14th near Lake Como in Ramsey County. From the description this sounds like an immature bird.
An immature BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE continues to be seen intermittently in the Grand Marais harbor in Cook County, though I have heard of no reports since the 15th. An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL has taken up residence in Ruth Andberg's Anoka County yard. The owl was seen as recently as the 18th.
Bob Ekblad found a NORTHERN SHRIKE in Olmsted County on November 15th. This was just west of the town of Rochester along Olmsted county road 25 near the Issac Walton wetlands.
Interesting was the report of a very late GRAY CATBIRD seen November 15th by Deanne Endrizzi near the visitor's center of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Hennepin County.
On November 19th, a late YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was reported by Bruce Fall from the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, and a late CHIPPING SPARROW is visiting Betsy Beneke's feeder in Detroit Lakes, Becker County.
Carmelita Nelson has a flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS at her feeder in Center City, Chisago County. I would appreciate hearing of other sightings of Evening Grosbeaks. Unusual is the ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK which had been coming to Don Feeney's feeder in the town of West St. Paul in Dakota County. The bird has not been seen since November 16th.
SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been reported from Olmsted, Kandiyohi, and McLeod counties. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, COMMON REDPOLLS and PINE GROSBEAKS are still fairly common in the northern third of the state. Redpolls have also been reported from Dakota, Hennepin, and Ramsey counties.
