This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday OCTOBER 14th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two BLACK-HEADED GULLS are being seen at the north end of Spirit Lake along Jackson County Road 2, about eight miles south and five miles west of the town of Jackson. These are adult birds in winter plumage and were seen here on October 10th and 11th. Near this location up to 50 GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES have been seen along state highway 86 about two miles north of the Iowa border.

Anthony Hertzel and Peder Svingen surveyed Mille Lacs Lake in east central Minnesota on the 14th and found 2,239 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, a late FORSTER'S TERN, and a GOLDEN EAGLE which was just south of Garrison in Crow Wing County. On the 11th they found a Golden Eagle along the auto tour road at Big Stone NWR in Big Stone County.

On the 14th, a female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen along State Highway 47 in Kanabec County a mile north of the town of Ogilvie, and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen at Pipestone National Monument in Pipestone County on the 12th. A female Mountain Bluebird is also being seen at the east end of Lake Byllesby Regional Park in southern Dakota County. Check the open area near the boat launch.

Dan Floren reported a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW at the Campbell Marsh Nature Trail on the 10th. The trail is located behind the DNR building site along State Highway 7 just west of Campbell Lake which is along the western edge of the town of Hutchinson in Mcleod County.

Leslie Kottke has a TUFTED TITMOUSE coming to her feeder in Rochester, Olmsted County, and Julie Brophy still has a BALTIMORE ORIOLE at her feeder in Victoria, Carver County, and it was seen as recently as October 13th.

And on the 13th Betsy Beneke reported two groups of EVENING GROSBEAKS at Tamarac NWR in Becker County.
