Another cold week brings us closer to spring migration. Already there is
evidence that the earliest species are starting to move slowly north and
get their summer plumage. Snow buntings are gathering in large flocks
and showing some of the bright black and white plumage already. Grouse
are getting excited for the spring nesting season and leks can be found
already.

Ben Wieland reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along Sautbine Road near
Walker in Cass County on February 2.

>From Pennington County, Shelley Steva reported 30 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE
one mile south of CR 3 along US 59 on February 3.

In Red Lake County on February 3, Shelley found two leks of SHARP-TAILED
GROUSE, one was two miles east of Plummer along CR 1 and one was five
miles east of Plummer along CR 1. On February 4, she saw six GRAY
PARTRIDGE and twenty SNOW BUNTINGS along CR 5 a couple of miles north of
Oklee.

Nathaniel Emery was in Polk County on February 4 where he counted about
250 GREATER PRAIRIE CHICKENS, 50 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, hundreds of SNOW
BUNTINGS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, three COMMON RAVENS, and a few COMMON
REDPOLLS. All of these were seen within the area between US2, MN 32, and
CR 102, in and around the Glacial Ridge project.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld watched five AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES which were
showing a little of their summer yellow at the feeder at the Ada nursing
home on February 4.

Thanks to Ben Wieland, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld, Nathaniel Emery, and
Shelley Steva for their reports.
