This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 10,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a mild week in the northwest , but not much melting has
occurred. A little freezing fog has glazed the sidewalks and secondary
roads, and with little traffic, they require careful driving, and not
many instant "birding stops".

>From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski continues to report GRAY JAYS,
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and PINE GROSBEAKS north of
Lancaster.

Doug Johnson reported that the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Bemidji, Beltrami
County, could still be found on January 7 at 313 Rako St SW. A
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER appeared in his yard at 7300 Vireo Ct NE.

On January 6, Doug saw a RING-BECKED PHEASANT east of Mahnomen in
Mahnomen County along MN 200.

Matt Mecklenburg relocated the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE near 1001 Elm St. S
in Moorhead, Clay County. On January 6, he found a NORTHERN PINTAIL with
about 500 MALLARDS in a field about 2 miles east of the northeast cell
at the Moorhead wastewater treatment ponds. Other species seen in the
county included WILD TURKEY, both nuthatches, an AMERICAN ROBIN, and
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.

Ben Fritchman reported on the Philbrook CBC , which was conducted in
Todd County on January 1. They found 34 species including two NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, NORTHERN FLICKER, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, SNOW BUNTINGS, HOARY
REDPOLL, and 8 PINE GROSBEAKS.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan found EVENING GROSBEAKS in Wadena County on
January 4, but were not able to re-locate the American Three-toed
Woodpecker reported earlier.

In Otter Tail County, Roland Jordahl reported SHARP-SHINNED HAWK,
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 5 AMERICAN ROBINS, and a
male NORTHERN CARDINAL on January 9.

Connie Norheim and Becky Oberlander were in the Rothsay area of Wilkin
County on January 5 where they observed GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS,
RING-NECKED PHEASANT, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, 6 DARK-EYED JUNCOS at a
feeder in Rothsay, SNOW BUNTINGS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.

Thanks to Ben Fritchman, Connie Norheim, Becky Oberlander, Doug Johnson,
Larry Wilebski, Matt Mecklenburg, Roland Jordahl, and Dan and Sandy
Thimgan for their reports.
