This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, July 4,

This has been a quiet birding week in the northwest. Birds have been
busy raising families, and it seems that birders are doing the same.
Because we have not had the hot weather, the landscape still sports the
bright greens of spring along with all the summer flowers.

>From Rydell NWR in Polk County, Elizabeth Almlie reported seeing CEDAR
WAXWINGS and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS at the refuge this week.

Here in Pennington County, I had a singing TENNESSEE WARBLER in the yard
on June 30. This is most unusual this late in June, although this
warbler has a history of showing up unexpectedly.

On a BBS in Marshall County on July 3, there were many LE CONTE'S
SPARROWS in all the wet meadows. Also one yellowlegs species was heard,
presumably on his way south already.

Craig Mandel, reporting on a Birding weekend trip, reported a LEAST
SANDPIPER in eastern Beltrami County last weekend in a flooded field. At
the Big Bog SRA, they found BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, GRAY JAY, BLACK-BILLED
MAGPIE, and eleven species of warblers. Also in the county there were LE
CONTE'S SPARROWS.
