Subject: Lake Byllesby, Dakota Cty

Lake Byllesby, Dakota County, finally has extensive mud flat, and small
flocks of shorebirds have been present this week. I've seen Dunlin (5),
Pectoral Sanpiper (9), Dowitcher (Short-or Long-billed? 3) and Killdeer.
Although it's uncertain that shorebirds will continue to regularly show up
here at this late date, I do want to let those of you who are interested
know about this.

Access to the northwest end of Lake Byllesby, which is closest to the mud
flats for viewing, is about 1/4 mi. east of the junction of Hwy 56 and Cty
88, at Randolph, MN. There is a turnoff on the south (lake) side of Cty 88.
Walk past the metal fence, along a road/paths which lead downhill veering
to your right, through some high grass, to an area open to the lake above
the beach. There are additional areas along the beach which are also
accessible. The west side can be difficult for viewing in the early morning,
due to the position of the sun when the sky is clear, but improves after
late morning.

The other viewpoint is about 1/2 mi. east from the 56/88 intersection, which
is the entrance to the Randolph Cemetery. Park and walk left (east) down a
road to an area with an open view of the lake.

Also, late this afternoon, on Lake Byllesby in Goodhue County (a county park
about two miles west of Cannon Falls, north of Hwy 19) were two Horned
Grebes.
