Our first icy blast occurred on October 5th, with three inches of snow falling at Roseau and lesser amounts to the south, including a dusting at Detroit Lakes. This front pushed another wave of migrants into the area, including waterfowl, hawks, ring-billed gulls, woodpeckers, Eastern bluebirds, sparrows and blackbirds.

At Maplewood State Park on the 8th, Shar and Paul Legenhausen observed EASTERN BLUEBIRD, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

>From the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County, Gary Tischer reports large flocks of waterfowl late this week, including CANADA GOOSE and TUNDRA SWAN, as well as divers such as RING-NECKED DUCK and LESSER SCAUP.

Three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen by Mary and Bill Wyatt on the 3rd, along U.S. Hwy. 10 near the town of Lake Park in Becker County.

At the Rydell National Wildlife Refuge in Polk County on the 5th, birds observed included WOOD DUCK, MALLARD, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, RUFFED GROUSE, CEDAR WAXWING, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW and DARK-EYED JUNCO.

At the Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge in Becker County on the 3rd, a flock of approximately 75 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen along CR 13. Also present was an AMERICAN BITTERN, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, (presumed) WESTERN MEADOWLARK and a large mixed flock of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS.

At the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge this week, waterfowl observed included TRUMPETER SWAN, WOOD DUCK, AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARD, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD and HOODED MERGANSER. Other birds observed included BALD EAGLE, COOPER'S HAWK, WILD TURKEY, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HERMIT THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, DARK-EYED JUNCO and EVENING GROSBEAK.
