As of July 21st, shorebirds were present in good numbers at the Agassiz NWR in Marshall County. A total of 19 species were recorded that day by Peder Svingen. Most interesting were two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and six AMERICAN AVOCETS. Other species included SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, MARBLED GODWIT, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County has many of the same species of shorebirds reported at Agassiz, but in fewer numbers. Young BLACK TERNS, AMERICAN COOTS and PIED-BILLED GREBES are also present. Best viewing is on Bisson Lake at the junction of CRs 13 and 14 west of the community of Callaway.

Both NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW and LE CONTE'S SPARROW were present along Roseau CR 123 northwest of Roseau on the 21st and the 23rd. YELLOW RAIL and VIRGINIA RAIL were also heard in the old Roseau Lake bed area on the 23rd.

Some interesting birds found along Hwy. 310 north of Roseau on the 22nd included WILLOW FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, INDIGO BUNTING and several warblers including NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, BLACK- AND-WHITE WARBLER, OVENBIRD and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER feeding fledglings.

Dorothy Russell reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the Crookston College Natural History Area in Polk County this past week.

Donna and Leon Thoreson were thrilled to see three RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS fledge from their nest on Toad Lake in Becker County on the 18th.

On the 24th, Von Vold watched a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in the yard at Potato Lake, north of Park Rapids in Hubbard County.
