Cold and blustery conditions returned to northwestern Minnesota this past week and bird activity at feeders has picked up, but signs of early migration were halted.

Kay Hartness reports that the VARIED THRUSH is still coming to their residence on the east side of Cotton Lake in Becker County.

Jeanie Joppru saw 6 COMMON MERGANSERS below the dam in Thief River Falls, Pennington County on the 2nd. These birds may have over-wintered in this spot.

From the Northwest Angle, Celeste Colson reports GREAT GRAY OWL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, PINE GROSBEAK, EVENING GROSBEAK, PINE SISKIN and both COMMON REDPOLL and HOARY REDPOLL.

Shelley Steva found 10 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Plummer in Red Lake County on the 5th.

>From the vicinity of Itasca State Park, birds reported by Connie Cox include BALD EAGLE, TRUMPETER SWAN, MALLARD, PINE GROSBEAK and EVENING GROSBEAK.

Other birds reported this week include ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, GREAT HORNED OWL, NORTHERN CARDINAL and increasing numbers of AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.
