Summer weather continues to be hot and dry this summer, but as of this writing, the heat has moderated somewhat. Shorebird southbound migration is building already, and the swallows are gathering while they prepare for the flight south.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County reported finding the nest site of a pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS with three fledglings in their neighborhood. The family visited their yard on July 29.

In Polk County, Dave Lambeth spotted a pair of BALD EAGLES with at least one young near the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds on July 27. At the ponds were about 250 EARED GREBES with at least 45 nests seen. Also there were more than 200 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and four BONAPARTE'S GULLS. Danielle Olson reporting from Rydell NWR included RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, and CEDAR WAXWING in her report this week.

In Marshall County, the weekly shorebird survey at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge tallied 2268 shorebirds including 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, and several RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. Also included in the total were 135 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, more than 1400 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 28 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.Most were at Tamarac Pool. A quick trip up to the refuge on Thursday revealed that shorebird numbers are building. Also SANDHILL CRANES are starting to gather in substantial numbers in the fields along the west side of the refuge.

Thanks to Dan and Sandy Thimgan, Dave Lambeth, and Danielle Olson for their reports.
