This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 19, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Fall has surely arrived leaving one with the impression that a switch had been thrown. Colors are appearing on the trees, cold winds blow whenever the sky is cloudy, and the mornings are crisp. So far little frost has occurred in the northwest, but some spots have seen it. Migration is proceeding, but there have been few reports this week. Cliff Steinhauer who lives in Marshall County near the west entrance to Agassiz NWR reported that the last time he saw a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was on September 14. He also reported a flock of over 200 AMERICAN CROWS three miles east of Holt this week, and a smaller flock of 12 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES. Here in Pennington County on September 16, I had both WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS at the feeder. On September 18, a COOPER'S HAWK with a full crop sailed over Johnson Drive as I drove home from work. Mark Otnes reported on September 15 from a trip to Buffalo River SP in Clay County where he saw HARRIS'S SPARROWS, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 12 warbler species including OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, NORTHERN PARULA, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. Thanks to Cliff Steinhauer and Mark Otnes for their reports. Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, September 26, 2013.
