This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, February 11, 2016 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Winter temperatures are making themselves felt this week in the northwest, but that doesn't seem to have deterred the birds from getting excited about the coming of spring. Later this weekend we hope to be back in the twenties and thirties above zero and it should be more fun to go birding.

This week Alma Ronningen in Dent in Otter Tail County reported that she has been feeding up to 32 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS in her yard most of the winter. Also present on February 11 were 3 MOURNING DOVES, a dozen AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, several COMMON REDPOLLS, PURPLE FINCHES, and a DARK-EYED JUNCO that has been there all winter.

From Polk County, Donna and Leon Thoreson saw the following species on February 5 in Oakdale cemetery in Crookston: PILEATED WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, BLUE JAY, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, and PINE SISKINS. An AMERICAN KESTREL was observed by Sandy Aubol along Gateway Drive in East Grand Forks on February 5. Tim Driscoll and also Zeann Linder reported a SNOWY OWL about a mile east of Sherack on February 6. This owl , or another, has been reported several times this winter in this location. Bruce Flaig had two RED CROSSBILLS visiting his feeder in southern Polk County on February 9.

This afternoon I saw PINE GROSBEAKS on a neighbor's evergreen trees east of Thief River Falls, Pennington County.

Tim Driscoll found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL near mile marker 9 along MN 310 north of Roseau on February 6.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Donna and Leon Thoreson, Bruce Flaig, Sandy Aubol, Tim Driscoll, and Zeann Linder for their reports.
