This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, Aug 23, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The migration in Duluth and vicinity this week has been mostly uneventful, apparently because of the absence of any significant weather systems moving through lately. Of special interest, however, was the movement of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS yesterday evening, the 22nd, when at least 3,000 individuals passed through the area. Between 6:15 and 7:30 pm there was a count of about 2,000 from the Lakewalk in Duluth, and in Two Harbors from 7:15 to 8:00 pm about 800 more were counted; earlier in the day a few hundred nighthawks were also noted at Hawk Ridge and along the North Shore.

About the only unusual species reported in Duluth so far this fall was the WHIMBREL seen today by Terry Wiens along the Sky Harbor Airport runway at Park Point. Also of note was the RED-NECKED GREBE seen by Jim Lind yesterday in Two Harbors.

The hawk count so far at Hawk Ridge has been quite slow so far this month, again due to the general lack of weather conducive to migration. Through today, fewer than 150 individuals have been tallied since the count started on the 15th, and the highest one-day total so far has been a modest 37. The movement of passerines, however, has been more significant at the Ridge, as evidenced by Dave Grosshuesch's banding totals. Today Dave banded 148 birds, including 2 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS; Dave also reports this is a record year for the number of MOURNING WARBLERS he has banded.

A reminder that the annual Hawk Weekend event takes place every year on the second weekend after Labor Day, and this year the dates are Sept 14-15-16. For more information about the schedule of activities, visit the Hawk Ridge website at ; this site also includes the daily raptor count at the Ridge from this fall and previous years.

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on Aug 30. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
