This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 23rd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

There have been no further sightings of the GYRFALCON that was banded last Saturday in the harbor.

A HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen in Two Harbors on the 19th but has not been reported since. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen again on the 19th, this time on the west side of Agate Bay in spruce trees near the tugboat.

There are good numbers of gulls at the Superior Landfill, including around 800 HERRING GULLS, 3 adult THAYER'S GULLS, an adult ICELAND GULL, 16 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and a first-winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL.

In the Sax-Zim area, a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE was seen on Cty Rd 52 between 207 and 202. GREAT GRAY OWLS were reported from Cty Rd 7, 2.25 and 2.9 miles north of the Sax Rd. As many as four BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES have been seen at the end of the Blue Spruce Rd east of Meadowlands, and a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD is coming to a feeder on the same road.

In Aitkin County, a GREAT GRAY OWL has been seen on Cty Rd 18 west of Pietz's road. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen over the weekend in the town of Aitkin, as well as in Cromwell in Carlton Cty and Floodwood in St. Louis Cty.

>From Grand Marais, Jim Lind reported flocks of LONG-TAILED DUCKS off Artist's Point and in Good Harbor Bay, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the municipal campground, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL in the Grand Marais harbor. Another pintail is still being seen in Duluth at the corner of the lake.
