This is the Duluth Birding Report for Sunday, December 16th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. This report is being updated to report on results from the Duluth and Two Harbors Christmas Bird Counts.

A tentative total of 54 species was found by 59 participants on Saturday's Duluth Christmas Bird Count. Two AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS were seen, representing a new species for the count. One was seen in Hunters Park at Lewis Street and Columbus Avenue, and another was seen at a private residence along Arrowhead Road. Other species of note included GADWALL and HOODED MERGANSER in the Duluth Harbor, two SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, a COOPER’S HAWK in East Duluth, four MERLINS, a PEREGRINE FALCON in the Duluth Harbor, a THAYER’S GULL at Canal Park, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL along Airpark Boulevard a quarter mile west of Rice Lake Road (CR 4), a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at Hawk Ridge, a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE at 1511 Skywood Lane, and a VARIED THRUSH at 226 Ridgewood Road, as well as a record-high count of 31 PILEATED WOODPECKERS. Species missed included Bufflehead, Snow Bunting, Common Grackle, and Evening Grosbeak. If you saw any of these species on Saturday within the Duluth count circle, please leave a message about your sighting.

Today's Two Harbors Christmas Bird Count turned up a preliminary total of 37 species, including an adult THAYER’S GULL at Knife River, a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER off the Clover Valley Road, BOREAL CHICKADEES off the Alseth Road, and a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE at 8th Ave. and 18th Street in Two Harbors and another at the municipal campground.

Repeating some of the sightings from Thursday's report, two GREAT GRAY OWLS were recently reported by Mike Hendrickson in the Sax-Zim Bog. One was seen along CR 29, about two miles east of Owl Avenue (CR 202). Another was along CR 47 about a half mile north of Maple Leaf Lake. Doug Kieser and Jim Otto found a GREAT GRAY OWL in Aitkin County on the 10th along CR 18, 3.0 miles east of US Highway 169.

Cliff Miller found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER in Lake County on the 8th at the White Pines picnic area along CR 2, 2 miles north of Forest Highway 11. Cliff also found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 9th, 0.25 mile from the west end of the Arkola Road (CR 52).

Birders are still welcome to look for the VARIED THRUSH at 226 Ridgewood Road in east Duluth, which was seen on the 15th along with a BOREAL CHICKADEE.
