This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 7th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

This report is being updated today to report on a SAY'S PHOEBE and other sightings over the weekend. The Say’s Phoebe was found by Kim Eckert and others on the 7th at the McQuade Road public boat access near the restroom building. It was later discovered that the bird was also present on the afternoon of the 6th. A probable ROSS’S GOOSE was also present at the McQuade Road access on the 7th.

As many as three ROSS'S GEESE were present on the 7th at the Two Harbors golf course. Kim Eckert’s group saw a SURF SCOTER at Burlington Bay on the 7th, but the Harlequin Duck from two days earlier could not be relocated. Two late CLIFF SWALLOWS seen on the 6th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors were carefully scrutinized to rule out Cave Swallows, which have been found in the past in the western Great Lakes in late fall.

Maggie Seely saw a GREAT EGRET flying over the Encampment River on the 7th. Denny and Barb Martin saw an adult THAYER'S GULL at Knife River on the 7th. Mike Hendrickson and Peder Svingen saw a first-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an adult THAYER’S GULL on the 7th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. The first GOLDEN EAGLES of the season were seen at Hawk Ridge on the 7th and a RED-THROATED LOON was seen on the 6th.

Repeating from the October 5th report, Dave, Pam and Lars Benson saw two SURF SCOTERS and a BLACK SCOTER on the 5th at Paradise Beach east of Grand Marais. They also saw an adult THAYER'S GULL at Taconite Harbor and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and the first COMMON REDPOLLS of the season at the Caribou River about 100 yards from the wayside.

Mike Hendrickson saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 5th at the Park Point Recreation Area. One was also seen on the 27th at the Hawk Ridge main overlook. A SHORT-EARED OWL flew by the main overlook on the 4th. Chris Mansfield saw two FRANKLIN'S GULLS on the 1st at the Park Point Recreation Area.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, October 11th.
