This is a summary of the Duluth birding report for Thursday, August 24, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The big news highlighted the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area mud flats where on the evening of Wednesday, August 23 Kim Eckert and another birder possibly saw a RUFF. The poor weather on Thursday precluded any other searches for the bird. If it is refound, the tape will be updated. Other birds seen included 12 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, SHORT BILLED DOWITCHERS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, BAIRD'S and STILT SANDPIPERS. At 31st street (lake side) on Park Point a WHIMBREL was seen August 22.

The big flight of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS occured during the evening of August 21. Dudley Edmonson reported seeing a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in his neighborhood. ALso at the Lakewood pumping station one RED CROSSBILL was seen flying by with lots of warblers, CEDAR WAXWINGS and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.

The next scheduled update of this tape will be on Thursday, August 31 and as always if you have birds to report, you may leave a message after the tone. BEEP
