This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 6 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

According to Steve Wilson 100+ BOREAL OWLS have been reported dead this year and there are still many unreported. This is about the same pace as last year when 176 Boreal Owls had been reported dead and 36 alive. This might be broken this year.

The Boreal Owl reported at Tim Dawson's on the Arnold Road was last seen on March 3.

GREAT GRAY OWLS are scarce to non-existant in and around Duluth. A Great Gray was seen on the Normanna Road 1 mile west of Jean Duluth Rd. In Carlton Co. along a side road off Co. Rd. 4, seven tenths of a mile west of highway 23.

Warren Nelson reported that Great Grays are hard to find with 2 individuals seen on Co. Rd. 3 two miles west of US Highway 169, another was found on Co. Rd. 1 one mile south of Co. Rd. 3. and on Co. Rd. 10 two miles north of Co. Rd. 18.

Warren also reported 2 SNOWY OWLS and 4 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS along Co. Rd 1 between Atikin and Co. Rd. 3. Hawk Owls can be found on Co. Rd. 3 one mile east of US Highway 169, Co. Rd. 18 7 tenths of mile of Co. Rd. 5 and on Co. Rd. 5 two miles south of Co. Rd. 18.

In Sax-Zim, a Hawk Owl was found on Co. Rd. 7 1/2 mile north of Co. Rd. 133 and in Lake Co. two Hawk Owls were found 7 1/2 and 9 1/2 miles south of Highway 1.

RED CROSSBILLS can be found at the junction of Lake Co. Rd. 2 and Highway 1 and in Aitkin Co. at the intersection of Co. Rd. 1 and Co. Rd. 3.

SHARP-TAILED GROUSE are still being seen in Aitkin Co. on a side road off Co. Rd. 5, 3.6 miles north of highway 210 and on Co. Rd. 380, 4 1/2 miles north of highway 210 (this is located on the west side of Co. Rd. 5)

Other birds that showed up in Duluth include MERLIN, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.

The next schedule update of the hotline is March 13.

------------------------------------------------- There were a few errors in the transcription of the March 6 Duluth tape:

-- The Carlton Co. Great Gray Owl was on the side road off Co. Rd. 4, 0.7 mile east of MN Hwy. 23.

-- The 4 N. Hawk Owls and 2 Snowy Owls along Aitkin Co. Rd. 1 were between 3 miles and 10.5 miles north of Aitkin.

-- The Aitkin Co. Rd. 3 N. Hawk Owl was 1 mile west of US Hwy. 169, and the Aitkin Co. Rd. 18 N. Hawk Owl was 0.7 mile east of Co. Rd. 5.

-- The Lake Co. N. Hawk Owls 7.5 miles and 9.5 miles south of MN Hwy. 1 were on Co. Rd. 2.

-- The Lake Co. Red Crossbill area is along the northern end (i.e., the last few miles) of Co. Rd. 2, and along nearby MN Hwy. 1 (i.e., within a few miles either east or west of the end of Co. Rd. 2).

-- The Aitkin Co. Sharp-tailed Grouse road 4.5 miles north of MN Hwy. 210 is Township 380.
