Early reports of spring migrants include COMMON MERGANSERS on the lake. A singing MOURNING DOVE in town and the RING-BILLED GULLS are back in the harbor. As many as seven BALD EAGLES have been seen this week in the Fon Du Lac neighborhood in west Duluth. Nancy Jackson reports seeing a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a pair of BUFFLEHEAD up the north shore. John Hyde also reports on the 22nd he saw an OSPREY at the Cascade lodge about ten miles west of Grand Marais as well as OLDSQUAW in Good (?) Harbor Bay closer to Grand Marais.

That HOARY REDPOLL is still at the Eagle Lake feeder. Many birders have visited there and some have angered the homeowner with their behavior. The owner is still willing to allow people to come see the bird, but you must park on Eagle Lake rd and walk up Park Drive. You may not enter the yard. The bird should be visible from the road. There is no need to walk through the yard. There has been a lot of traffic. If you have previously seen this bird you may not want to go back for another look.

Other winter species include NORTHERN HAWK OWL. Possibly two in Lake Co. A bird was seen twenty miles north of Two Harbors on hwy 2. And a bird was seen thirty five miles north of Two Harbors at the Greenwood lake access. It has been seen from the road, others have hiked west of co rd 2 on a snowmobile trail at the Greenwood lake access about a half a mile in. There also has been a NORTHERN HAWK OWL seen at Co Rd. 52 in the Sax-Zim bog area three and one half miles west of # 7.

GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen this past week in the Sax-Zim bog area on Stone Lake rd or Co Rd.319 east of Hwy 7. And Dan Versaw of Two Harbors saw at least four GREAT GRAY OWLS along Co Rd 2 four miles south of the Greenwood Lake access in Lake Co. SPRUCE GROUSE have been seen in the traditional area near the junction of Co Rd 2 and the Sand River as well as between there and hyw 1 as well as, on hwy1 one half mile east of the junction with Co Rd 2.

BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS were seen along the Spruce Rd which is on hwy 1 about thirteen miles east of the junction with Co Rd 2 in Lake Co. The BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen one half mile down the road. The THREE-TOED WOODPECKER at the junction with the snowmobile trail. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are still being seen regularly on the western side of Two Harbors. And also between Two Harbors and Duluth seem to be the best places to look for them. There have been sightings along the expressway.
