This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 9th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Steve Hansen found a probable PARASITIC JAEGER on Cass Lake, Cass County on the morning of August 1st. The bird, described as an adult, was not relocated later on the day. This represents the earliest date on record for this species in Minnesota, and a first for Cass County.

A SNOWY EGRET was found by Ric Zarwell in Houston County on August 8th. It was on an island at Pool #8 on the Mississippi River. This was along state highway 26 at mile marker 10, a few miles south of Brownsville.

Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen on August 3rd by Bob Russell and Jim Mattsson in the town of Russell, Lyon County. They were seen on a power line just south of the Amoco station on the east side of state highway 23.

The August 8th, the Big Stone NWR shorebird count in Big Stone/Lac Qui Parle counties produced approximately 7,000 individual birds of 17 species. Most of these were seen from the Auto Tour Road. Species seen included 1722 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2105 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 615 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 162 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS. Most of the Buff-breasted Sandpipers were at the East Pool off Big Stone County road 21.

Buff-breasted Sandpipers were also found at the sewage ponds of the Big Stone County towns of Clinton, Beardsley, and Browns Valley. Also at the Browns Valley lagoons was a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE in with a group of 10-15 WILSON'S PHALAROPES on August 5th.

And two AMERICAN AVOCETS were found in Big Stone County, also on the 5th. They were in a flooded field on the north side of county road 28 just west of the town of Barry.

On August 5th, a minimum of 75 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were at the Jurik Sod Farm in Dakota County and on the 6th, 164 were counted there. Directions are to drive four miles east of Farmington on Dakota County road 66. Turn right on county road 82 and drive about 1/4 mile. Most of the birds were on the west side of road.

On August 8th, Bob Dunlap found a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE about half a mile east of the intersection of Carver County Road 17 and U.S. Highway 212 in the town of Chaska.

And finally, Chet Meyers reports that many COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen migrating over Cedar Lake in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, on the 1st, and on the 9th, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH were noted by Ed Levering as they began their southward movement into southern Minnesota.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, August 16th.
