Today there are extensive mudflats in the New Germany/Crane Creek area =
of NW Carver/NE McLeod Counties. Unfortunately the spot along Hwy. 7, =
1/4 mile west of the Carver County line is rapidly drying, and shorebird =
numbers have seriously declined at this spot. The best spot right now =
is the set of 3 ponds along Cnty. Rd. 30 between Yancy and Yale Ave. in =
Carver County. The largest pond, which is on the south side of Cnty. =
Rd. 30, had the most shorebirds: around 400 individuals. This spot =
should be productive for a few weeks yet. Present were:
-Greater Yellowlegs
-Lesser Yellowlegs
-Solitary Sandpiper
-Least Sandpiper
-Semipalmated Sandpiper
-Baird's Sandpiper
-Pectoral Sandpiper
-Stilt Sandpiper
-Killdeer

At the two ponds on the north side of Cnty. Rd. 30, there were around =
200 Great Egrets wading in the shallow water. There weren't nearly as =
many shorebirds at these two ponds, but there might be in another week. =
Today there was another interesting bird at these ponds: an adult =
Prothonotary Warbler. This is the first time I have seen one in this =
area, but there is some suitable nesting habitat for them.
