I have lots of lists,
=20
books and articles I've read,=20
movies I've seen
checks I've written
cars I've owned
every bird I see everyday and where I saw it (I only list it the first =
time I see the species in that day)
(I've lived all over the continent so I've seen lots of birds)
=20
Why? I am not certain... I like to look back I guess. This is no game to =
me... It is a habit.=20
=20
I get excited when I see birds. No matter where they are. All of the =
birds on my list are seen in their natural habitat. =20
=20
However, I would not want anyone to dismiss the excitement I had at the =
Sonoran Desert Museum passing through the aviary and spying some unusual =
birds to me including various orioles, quail, and tanagers. Or the =
thrill of seeing many species of hummingbird in the hummingbird aviary. =
Finally I saw a Crested Caracara in a cage. I truly beautiful sight. Not =
on my list... but something I will remember a long time.=20
=20
I like how someone said that not all listers a playing a game. It's =
memories for me. Let's let people keep their personal lists without =
judgment.

Polemic -- a controversial discussion.

Obviously true.

The ABA rules, as shown on page 81 of the 2002 ABA listing report, are =
as I described. Interpretations of those rules, the angels dancing on =
the heads of pins, indeed take many more words, at which point much of =
the joy of this pursuit begins to drain away.=20

These hundreds of words, in Minnesota and for the ABA, seek to establish =
guidelines that keep lists within common bounds, on the same playing =
field. What is not and cannot be addressed is the absolute inequality =
inherent in all of the other realities that enter the creation of one's =
lists -- age, physical condition, family responsibility, employment =
situation, free time, and income, to name a few.=20

Thresholds exist for many published lists, including some Minnesota =
lists. To have your state life list published, for example, you must =
have reached an arbitrary number. This ignores the fact that a lesser =
number might well represent greater skill and determination, depending =
upon the life situation of the individual creating the list.=20

The rules are fine for what they do, but they are no more than veneer.

Jim Williams
