Ran into John Hockema and his brother Chris, as well as Drew Smith and
Mark Ochs while birding today.

The following was of interest:

Empire Substation:

Dicksissels (lots of them, 6-8 males and a female that I saw)
Grasshopper Sparrows (several)
Western Meadowlark (2 at least)

180th St Marsh:

Least Bittern seen and heard as it flew back and forth twice in the
marsh on the left side just before the barn.

Emery just before 160th:

Brewer's Blackbird
Loggerhead Shrike

140th St Marsh:

1st year male Orchard Oriole just before the intersection at 142nd ave &
Emery
Adult male Orchard Oriole flying across the marsh seen by Mark Ochs

CINNAMON TEAL - This looks to be a first summer male bird. It was
studied intensely by all 5 of us and Drew Smith took extensive notes as
only he can. I took 10 photographs which are probably at too great a
distance to be useful but I will see what I come up with. Bird had a
heavier bill than the 3 blue-winged drakes it was associating with. It
had a nice deep red eye. The head was a rich cinnamon reddish color,
whereas the body was a somewhat lighter color. Contrasting against the
spottiness of the sides of the blue-winged teals, the sides of the
Cinnamon were had much larger speculums. The pattern seemed much more
defined, and definitely was not spotty as you would see in an adult male
blue-winged. It lacked the black coloration on the undertail coverts
and tail similar to how a non-breeding adult male would look. Im sure
Drew's description is significantly better and more detailed than this
(he wrote a full page!) but this is what I can recall from memory. We
had extended looks through scopes from 11:00am to 11:45am when we left.
The bird was on the back west end of the marsh.

Chris
