Held 12 June. Route runs from about 9 miles SSW of Benson to a point a
couple of miles northeast of Appleton. Highlights: Good numbers of Western
Meadowlark, Vesper Sparrow, Western Kingbird (8), Upland Sandpiper (5, 1 previous
year including one drinking water in an active quarry); several Grasshopper
Sparrow, large colony of Bank Swallows near Appleton (240 on one stop!), 2
Red-headed Woodpeckers, 2 Harriers, no Huns, fairly good numbers of pheasants, 1
Field Sparrow, 1 N. Cardinal, no Swainson's Hawk this year, decent number of
grassy and weedy fields on the landscape in Swift County. Most wetlands had
water but no shorebird habitat noted. Tree Swallow breeding in the hole in the
top (side) of an LP gas tank for the second straight year is a very unique
location.
Later in the day a Greater Prairie Chicken was seen flying over U.S.
12, 2 miles west of De Graff, Swift County, probably one of the introduced
birds that decided to wander a bit. The area along U.S. 12 one mile west of
Montrose where a Black-necked Stilt was reported earlier has very good shorebird
habitat and should be checked as fall migration (are you ready?!!) starts next
week for early arriving birds.
