This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 11th, 2003,
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Mike Hendrickson spotted a WHIMBREL at the junctions of Scenic and
Expressway Hwy 61 in Duluth on the 9th. He also found shorebirds at Park
Point on the lake side near the airport: over 20 SANDERLINGS, 1
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, and 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE.
Yesterday, in the same location, Tom Auer found over 50 Sanderlings. He
also reported 2 CASPIAN TERNS still in the harbor area.
Alison Clarke reported a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE from her yard on the 10th.
Jim Barrett continues to find a variety of shorebirds in Morgan Park--7
species on the 9th, including three AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS.
Back on August 31, Denny Meyer banded a CAROLINA WREN near Big Fork in
Itasca County.
Peder Svingen reported the first big migration fallout in the fog on
Minnesota Point on the 8th, including among many birds, 19 species of
warblers and several PHILADELPHIA VIREOS.
There have been no big flights at Hawk Ridge yet, so there are many raptors
yet to come. This weekend is the annual Hawk Weekend, so there will be
activities at Hawk Ridge all day on Saturday and Sunday, as well as
programs at UMD on Friday and Saturday evenings. Check at the main overlook
for details.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, September 18th.
The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 728-5030, and
callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of
each tape.
