As of yesterday (12/8) the Mute Swan was still on Lake George
in southwest Rochester.
A couple years ago there were two Mute Swans in this area, one
on the lake itself and another in the river 1/4 to 1/2 mile downstream.
These birds were found to be escapes from a housing development
very close by. I wouldn't be too surprised to learn that this
one escaped from there as well...
I know of a farm in Dodge county that has a Mute Swan on the property
and they used to have two. One escaped...never (?) to be seen again.
Many of the Mute Swans we see here in the southeast are escapes
and since I can't tell the difference if I can't see a band
or other identifying mark (clipped hallux as an example) I don't count =
them anymore...
but I do report them, people can do what they wish with the information.
My better half loves them, they look very graceful.
I like Trumpeter's...
