This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 1, 2004,
sponsored by the MInnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A GYRFALCON was reported from just northeast of Lutsen on Hwy 61 on the
north shore of Lake Superior on the 31st. I have no further details,
and unfortunately, I couldn't make out the reporter's name. Another
report of a Gyrfalcon was made on the 28th from Duluth. As far as I
know, no one has re-found this bird. A PEREGRINE FALCON, most likely
the same bird that has been in the harbor this winter, was seen near
the EPA lab at the East end of Duluth on the 31st.

A HARLEQUIN DUCK, presumably the bird seen most recently in Two
Harbors, was at the mouth of the French River on the 31st. A
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was there on the same day.

Keith Pulles reported two first-winter GLAUCOUS GULLS from Two Harbors
today.

Warren Nelson reported a GREAT GRAY OWL 1/10th of a mile west of the
junction with Pietz's Road this afternoon. This is the only report of a
Great Gray in the past week.

Frank Nicoletti reports having both PINE GROSBEAKS and EVENING
GROSBEAKS at his feeder north of Duluth. There are still good numbers
of COMMON REDPOLLS around the city.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, January 8.
