This last weekend my dad and I headed out to western Minnesota to attend
the Morris Bird festival. We left Friday to get an extra day in, we
birded Aitkin, and Felton prairie. We came home on Sunday night. The
whole week we turned up 133 species. Some include
All 6 grebe species-Clarke=92s at Thielke Lake on Saturday
5 species of herons they include a bittern on the Pom De Terre River and
a pair of snowy egrets. The snowy egrets weren=92t far from Thielke =
Lake.
Take 62 until you reach 65 and turn south for a mile until you hit 10
and go east for about 3 miles and turn south again on 21 for about one
mile. Their will be a small pond on the left hand side of the road that
contained the snowy=92s. Several great egrets accompanied them.
3 species of geese including 2 G. W. F geese on Thielke Lake
Trumpeter Swan- 2
17 species of ducks
11 raptors
5 grouse species including 2 sharp-tails=92s at Aitkin, 1 G. P. Chicken =
at
Felton, and 2 Gray Partridge somewhere in Steven=92s County
Virginia rail
Sandhill Crane- 1 in Aitkin
17 shorebirds including both godwits, dunlin, solitary sandpiper, and
both dowitchers.
2 tern species- commons on a lake in Steven=92s County
Barred Owl- Aitkin
Loggerhead Shrike- 2 in Felton
All the swallow species
Only 3 species of warblers
11 species of sparrows including grasshopper
C. C. Longspur- at Felton
Pine Grosbeak- at Aitkin
