A few interesting birds, numbers, and habitat:

Am Avocet--9 at Island Lake (n end), Lyon County on Thursday evening.
Shorebird conditions good there with many exposed flats

White-fronted Geese--24 at pond just north of Dead Coon Lake with 2 Snows (1
Blue-phase). Check north end shore of unnamed lake (on DeLorme Atlas) just to
the west for many shorebirds

Split Rock Creek Rec. Area--22 Clay-colored Sparrows on road with Chippies.
Several Harris Sp.

Red Rock Prairie, Cottonwood Co.--50% recently burned (still warm in spots).
2 Upland Sands, 4 American Pipit (or are they Water Pipits this week?), 1-2
longspurs heard calling briefly in 35 mph winds but not long enough to tell
species.

Common Tern--2 with 24 Forster's on road (County 21) at north end of Lake
Sarah, Murray County.

Good numbers of peep (Western, Baird's, and Least) throughout SW counties.
Some good habitat at bridge crossings along Rock Creek in SW Pipestone County
and NW Rock County with 10-30 birds at many bridges.

Ponds just west of New Ulm along Hwy 14 had good habitat and fair numbers of
shorebirds. Also pond on east side of Hwy 15 near Lafayete, Nicollet County
had some birds and looks good for the next week.

This is the weekend when Eskimo Curlews once gathered near Vermilion, SD.
Watch your pastures in SW MN!!!
Bob Russell, Dakota County
