This was the last organized MOU field trip for the 2004 season. 10 =
birders came along and saw a good variety of birds.

Highlights:

-all three Scoter species
-Long-tailed Ducks
-Lesser-black-backed Gull (Knife River)
-Thayer's Gull=20
-Pacific Loon (our group found the Loon at Grand Marais Harbor on Nov. =
6)
-Northern Hawk Owl ( our group found this bird on mile marker 75 along =
Hwy. 61 Cook Co. at 11:30am).
** Boreal Owl: I met Bill Lane at the Holiday gas station and he invited =
our group to visit his banding operation. He originally decided back in =
October to band Boreal Owls in private. It was a complete surprise to us =
and we thank him for his invitation. We watched and witnessed two =
female Boreal Owls get netted and released.
-Great Horned Owl (Fide Kim Eckert's group) Artist Pt.
-Great Gray Owl (Fide Kim Eckert's group on Co. Rd. 7 3 mi W of Gunflint =
Trl)
-Northern Goshawk
-3 Black-backed Woodpeckers (Stony Pt, Two Harbors and Croftville Rd =
(Cook Co. 87)
Bohemian Waxwings (50-70)
-Northern Shrikes (a lot of them)
-Lapland Longspur
-Winter Finches: Large movements on 11/6-7 of Redpolls, Pine Grosbeaks =
were moving in fair numbers today, Pine Siskins were mixed in with the =
Redpolls. We heard a few Am. Goldfinches.
-Red Crossbills (Knife River Jeff Stephenson pointed it out)
-White-winged Crossbills (Hovland-Cook Co.)

I thank my co-leader Tom Auer for helping me out spotting birds, =
answering questions and keeping the group together! =20

Well another season has ended and so has my term as MOU field Trip =
Chairman. I decided to not come back as chair of MOU field trips. I want =
to concentrate on other things. I have my new birding field trips =
"Minnesota Birding Treks", my kids are getting more active in sports =
and other activities, my new up and coming web site (due in December), =
and I just got hired by ObservTours! This doesn't mean I will not be =
part of MOU field trips as I will no doubt be a co-leader on some of =
trips for 2005.=20

So thank you all that came along this year!! You know in two years of =
running MOU field trips I registered 200+ birders on MOU field trips, =
saw over 260 species, registered 30 new people to the MOU and most of =
all they shared my love for McDonalds, Hardees and Burger King fast food =
restaurants. I also opened their eyes to alternative food stops such as =
the deli at the Holiday gas station in Tofte or the Super America gas =
station in Two Harbors! All in all we had a great two years and I =
enjoyed meeting all of you. =20
