On a trip to North Central Minnesota from Monday, Nov. 8th through Thursday.
Nov 11 the the following observation were made:
Monday, Nov. 8th: two Great Gray Owls observed in Northern Itasca Co. One at
Alvwood along Hiway 46, and the other was seen along Itasca Co. 24, just east
of Island Lake.
Tuesday, Nov 9th: a Great Gray Owl was observed hunting along Hiway 72 at
milepost 41 in Beltrami Co. and a dead Great Gray Owl (road kill) was found at
milepost 49 on Hiway 72 in Beltrami Co. A Spruce Grouse was flushed from Lake
of the Woods County road 77, 1 mile east and 1 mile south of Carp, MN. A
Great Horned Owl was found in Northern Itasca Co. along County road 40 NE of
Effie, MN. A Boreal Owl was caught and banded by Denny Meyer near Bigfork, MN. in
Itasca Co.
Pine Grosbeaks were observed in Beltrami Co. at the Big Bog State Recreation
Area and along Itasca Co. 52. Evening Grosbeaks were found at McCarthy Beach
and Schoolcraft State Parks. There were scattered flocks of Redpolls and Snow
Buntings observed throughout this trip.
