Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter
Aitkin County Birding Day
Field Trip Report

32 - Species observed
9 - Participants

Our group enjoyed a perfect late fall day of birding in Aitkin County on 
Monday.  We encounter most of the species of birds previously reported including 4 
Northern Hawk Owls, two of which were observed feeding on small rodents!  
Here were some of our more interesting species observed by our group.

@ Rough-legged Hawk - 10 observed along CR 1, 18 & 5.
@ Bonaparte's Gull - 100s observed in Crow Wing County, on and over Lake 
Mille Lac's.
    Near the Mac Donald's in the town of Garrison.
@ Northern Hawk Owl 
    1. 8:00am - CR 21, 1/10th of a mile East of CR 1
    2. 9:15am & 10:00am - CR 18, 1.5 miles East of Hyw 169
    3. 10:00am - CR 18, .5 miles East of Hyw 169
    4. 11:00am  Hyw 200, 1/2 mile West of the Elliot Forest Road (Rabey Tree 
Farm)
@ Northern Shrike - 5 along CR 1, 18, 5 and one along Hyw 200
@ Gray Jay - 9:30am - CR 18, near the Hebron Cemetery
@ Snow Bunting - CR 10, 2 miles South of Hyw 200
@ Common Redpolls - CR 5, 3 miles South of CR 18 - there were also flocks 
observed in  
     flight at several other locations in the county.
