Hi:

Dave Grosshuesch, Jim Lind and I are organizing a owl survey on Dec =
11-12. This is the weekend before the official CBC's (Christmas Bird =
Count) are to begin. The reason we are conducting a survey is because of =
this massive owl invasion that has been occurring since Oct. 1. How it =
works is that Dave and Jim will be organizing routes in St. Louis and =
Lake Counties. Other counties like Cook and Aitkin will be part of this =
survey as well.

We will conduct these surveys in December, January, February and March. =
The same routes in December will be used for Jan, Feb and March. The =
survey/route will begin before dawn or at dawn and end at dark. So =
roughly in December the routes will begin around 6:45am and end around =
5:00 or 5:30pm. As we go into Feb. thru March the owl routes will begin =
earlier as the sun rises earlier and set later. The best times to find =
some species of owls like Great Grays and Boreal Owls is early dawn and =
dusk. So its important that we start these surveys with the rising and =
setting of the sun. The survey teams will have a data sheet that Dave is =
creating. This data sheet will have data areas to fill out when you spot =
an owl on your route. After the survey is done in December and all the =
data has been emailed or mailed to=20
Dave and Jim then we will mail out the data for that Dec. survey to the =
volunteers. I also believe this data will be shared on MOU listserve as =
well. We will do this after each survey is completed.

So for now, if your are interested in being of this survey for Dec-March =
let me know ASAP! I want to create teams and assigned routes to the =
volunteers soon. All you need to bring is binoculars/scopes/Minnesota =
Atlas/Gazeteer/clip board for data sheet/weather radio (if you have =
one)/coffee/snacks and your desire to find owls!

This is a big invasion and it began the first week of October. There is =
so many back roads and places that are sure to hold owls. Peder Svingen =
and others have been documenting all owls reported since October. Its a =
frustrating job when there is so many owls reported and some of them =
might be the same same owl. So if you run a very organized survey on a =
weekend and create survey routes then a broader understanding of how =
many owls are actually out there will clear the picture some.=20

I need your help. So let me know if you are interested in the following =
surveys:

December 11-12
January
February
March=20

Thanks!
