Field Trip Report

9 - participants
33 - Species observed or heard by the group

Goodhue County
@ Bayside & Colville Park, Redwing
Eagles and Common Mergansers were abundant at these two parks, with 100s of
Mergansers feeding in the river along the East side of Colville Park.
@ Frontenac State Park
A Barred Owls was observed near the picnic grounds that over look the
Mississippi River.
@ CR 16 & CR 9
1/2 a dozen mixed flocks of 50 to 500? - mainly Lapland Longspurs, with some
Horned Larks and Snow Buntings mixed in. These flocks of birds were
observed feeding along side and in the county roads mentioned.
@Wacouta Road
Morning Doves, Red-bellied Woodpeckers and some flocks of Dark-eyed Junco's
were observed along this road and at some of the residents feeders.

Wabasha County
@ overlooks of the Mississippi River between Camp Lacupolis and Reads Landing
There were 1000s of Common Merganser and 100s of Common Goldeneye along this
open stretch of River. We spent about 2 hours sorting through these ducks
and were able to pick out 3 American Coots, 1 Black Duck and several hybrid
Black Duck/Mallards, 2 Greater Scaup and a dozen other Scaup which were to far
to ID. Was a wonderful sight to observe the large rafts of Common
Mergansers, as the Eagles would move them around.
@ CR 77, CR 10, CR 32, CR 33 & CR 16 - Along these county roads we observed
several dozen large flocks of Longspurs, with a good number of Horned Larks
and some Snow Buntings mixed in. CR 32 had a large number of Dark-eyed
Junco's and CR 16 had a flock of several hundred American Tree Sparrows.
