During today's Little Falls Christmas Bird Count, I found a Snowy Owl
near the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. From Hwy 10 take CR35
east about 4.5 miles. Turn right on Inca Road, which goes south 0.5
miles, then west 0.5 miles, and then south again. The owl was
originally found at the corner where the road turns from west to south
(1 mile). Later in the day, I relocated it on an irrigation system
nearer the intersection of CR35 and Inca Road.
Not to be outdone, John Kroll found a Screech Owl on his part of the
count. From Royalton (Hwy 10), take CR26 west until you cross the
Mississippi River. Turn right on CR52, go north approximately 2 miles
to 65th Street. Take 65th Street west about 0.8 miles. (Sorry, I
forgot to check the mileage). There is a small creek (snow-covered)
that runs along the north side of the road at this point. There are
also a number of bluebird houses here. Look across the creek for a bird
house made from a section of hollow tree trunk, which is mounted on a
pasture fence post.
I also found Bohemian Waxwings in two places. In Little Falls I found a
flock near the corner of 7th Ave. and 5th Street SE that flew off and I
could not relocate. The second flock was a few miles north of Little
Falls on Belle Plaine Drive. Take 371 north to CR46, then go east on
CR46 0.25 miles to Belle Plaine Drive. The waxwings were about 0.25
miles down the road, but there are crab apples in a number of places
along this half-mile road.
