This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, March 18,
2005 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You

For March , this has been a cold week in the northwest, but it now shows
signs of warming up, and the sun at a higher angle has more power. Snow
is slowly evaporating and occasionally melting. Dare we hope that we
won't have another big snowstorm to end the winter. Owls are still being
reported though not is such large numbers as before. Please continue to
report sightings of northern owls so we can get a true picture of where
they are and how many they are. Bald Eagles are being reported from most
counties this week.

Susan Wiste observed a RED-TAILED HAWK eight miles west of Alexandria in
Douglas County on March 17th.

Otter Tail County birders are starting to report returning migrants such
as the RED-TAILED HAWK reported by Pam Linder on March 13th. Daryl Jorud
reported a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in Battle Lake on March 16th. Dennis
Weisenborn relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL near Bluffton at the same
location where it was first found. To get there take CR 19 north from
Bluffton to CR 76, then east two miles and south one mile.=20

Shar Legenhausen, reporting from Becker County,  saw  two TRUMPETER
SWANS and three BALD EAGLES on  March 16th. She reports that SNOW
BUNTINGS and COMMON REDPOLLS are still being seen in the county.

In Clay County, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported 15 pairs of CANADA
GEESE on the edge of the Red River north of Moorhead on March 16th.
Three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were also seen a mile and a quarter north of
Moorhead.

>From Beltrami County, Pat Rice reported a  GREAT GRAY OWL along CR 27 on
March 10th. A BALD EAGLE was also seen in Beltrami County and another in
Clearwater County.

Several observers mentioned HORNED LARKS in Polk County. Nathaniel Emery
reported that the Boreal Owl could not be relocated near Fertile on
March 11th. He did report  a RING-NECKED PHEASANT, AMERICAN KESTREL,
BELTED KINGFISHER, GREAT HORNED OWL  northeast of Fertile, and BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS at the Environmental Learning Center. Mike Christopher reported
six BALD EAGLES northwest of Crookston, and a PILEATED WOODPECKER in
Crookston.

A taiga MERLIN was seen by Shelley Steva on March 17th, two miles north
of Plummer in Red Lake County. A BALD EAGLE was also seen.

Shelley Steva reported a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in southern Pennington County
on March 11th. We continue to have modest numbers of COMMON REDPOLLS,
and PINE SISKINS  at the feeder near Thief River Falls.

Ryan Sansness, at Old Mill State Park  in Marshall County, found a GREAT
GRAY OWL in his yard on March 14th. Also seen in the area were
increasing numbers of AMERICAN CROWS, and HORNED LARKS. Maggie Anderson
reports that two GREAT GRAY OWLS continue to be seen almost daily along
CR 12 between CR117 and CR 7.  Two BALD EAGLES have returned to Agassiz
NWR and are being seen near Ditch 11 control structure. SHARP-TAILED
GROUSE have been seen dancing on leks in Marshall County near Agassiz
NWR. A GREAT HORNED OWL is being seen at the headquarters of Agassiz
NWR.

Melanie Torkelson reported that BALD EAGLES are being seen at the Roseau
River WMA in Roseau County this week.

Jenny Moorman reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE and  DARK-EYED JUNCO in Lake of
the Woods County this week.
