Hi,
Last Saturday, I made my 6th trip in the last 5 weeks to Aitkin County
in search of GGOs. I've noticed much of what others have already said,
Owls staying in the trees, less acceptable of humans, shortened hunting
time. The one GGO I did see actively hunting caught a critter in the
grass. Shortly thereafter he headed into the trees.
This last weekend I noticed alot less snow in some of the hunting fields
I had visited before. Maybe the voles, or other critters, are becoming
more active, above ground, and the Owls are having easier pickings,
using sight rather than sound to find their prey. This could result in
less time needed for hunting and more time for sitting in trees watching
us wonder what they're up to. Just a thought.
Also, the pair of Bald Eagles are nesting again on Clouquet Island and
can be seen from the Clouquet Island Scenic Overlook on Dayton River Rd
between Dayton and Anoka. They have been there for a few weeks now.
