This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 6, 2005
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may
also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888

It has been a long cold week in northwest Minnesota, but the weather has
begun to break, and the last few days have been warmer. With increasing
temperatures, migration is starting to resume, and we hope that it will
encourage birders to get out and look for the returning species.

Cliff Steinhauer was in Lake of the Woods County on May 1st where he
found the ground covered with snow. He reported two SNOW BUNTINGS and a
GREAT GRAY OWL south of Faunce that day. Jenny Moorman reported a GREAT
GRAY OWL at milepost 48 on CR 19 south of Baudette seen twice this week.
Other species on her report this week included AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, TURKEY VULTURE, AMERICAN BITTERN, and several
species of sparrow including CHIPPING SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.=20

Bill Unzen in Beltrami County reported a COMMON NIGHTHAWK on April 30.
AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, WESTERN GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, and CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW were seen on May 3; a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and a BROAD-WINGED
HAWK on the 4th.

Shelley Steva saw a HERMIT THRUSH in her yard in Pennington County near
Thief River Falls on April 28, and on May 5th, there were over a hundred
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS , a few HARRIS'S SPARROWS and at least two
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS in our yard just down the street. Several TREE
SWALLOWS have also returned.

On May 4, Shelley Steva observed two SHORT-EARED OWLS in Polk County
along CR 252 about three miles east of US 75. Pat Rice found twenty-four
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS along US 2 in Polk County that day. Bruce Flaig
reported six TRUMPETER SWANS, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, TREE SWALLOW, GRAY
CATBIRD, CHIPPING SPARROW, WHTE-THROATED SPARROW, and YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER.

Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County had some interesting species to
report including RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, RUSTY
BLACKBIRD on May 3, and a lingering PINE SISKIN on May 3.

Susan Wiste reported both YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and PINE SISKIN in
Douglas County near Alexandria on April 29.

On May 1, Beau Shroyer reported six HORNED GREBES on Lake Osakis in Todd
County. Three CATTLE EGRETS were found along CR 3 north of Osakis, a
PEREGRINE FALCON was along CR 2 near its intersection with CR 100, and
GREATER YELLOWLEGS were found near Sauk Center. A BROWN THRASHER and
SAVANNAH SPARROW were also found.

Thanks to Shelley Steva, Susan Wiste, Cliff Steinhauer, Beau Shroyer,
Bill Unzen , Alma Ronningen, Bruce Flaig, Jenny Moorman, and Pat Rice
for their reports.
