This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 13, 2005
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may
also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
It's amazing what one nice day will do - was that our summer? A lot of
species moved north on Sunday, but the storm on Sunday evening brought
lots of wind and rain and kept some of them from stopping here. With the
rain and sun, leaves are popping out all over, and warbler watching is
getting more difficult.
The EURASIAN WIGEON found last Sunday at the Red Lake Falls wastewater
treatment ponds was not relocated on Monday, so it must have been chased
out with a lot of the other ducks in the Sunday evening storm.
Shorebirds are starting to be reported in the area. The most numerous
species reported this week is the WILSON'S PHALAROPE found in nearly all
counties.
>From Douglas County, Beau Shroyer reported three SOLITARY SANDPIPERS on
May 8th. Sherri Norland found SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, CHIPPING SPARROW, and
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW there on May 7.
Otter Tail County species reported by Mark Otnes included GREEN HERON,
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, and YELLOW WARBLER on May 6. Melissa Driscoll
found a TURKEY VULTURE, PRAIRIE FALCON, and EASTERN MEADOWLARK at the
Otter Tail Prairie SNA on that day. Dan and Sandy Thimgan have been busy
birders in that county where they found SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, and PALM
WARBLERS on the 5th, the BALTIMORE ORIOLES turned up on the 7th,
CHIMNEY SWIFTS, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, WARBLING VIREO, MARSH WREN,
YELLOW WARBLER, and AMERICAN REDSTART on the 8th, GREEN HERON on the
9th, followed by LEAST FLYCATCHER, GRAY CATBIRD, and BOBOLINK on the
10th. Alma Ronningen reported a HOUSE WREN arriving on May 10.
In Wilkin County, Dan and Sandy Thimgan found lots of LECONTE'S SPARROWS
at the Rothsay WMA on May 6. At the Breckenridge wastewater treatment
ponds, they reported 90 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 1 WILLET, and an EARED
GREBE.
On May 7, Shar Legenhausen reporting from Becker County mentioned LEAST
FLYCATCHER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
Bob O'Connor found a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH in Clay County in the woods
along the gravel road branching left from the end of CR 108 near Felton
Prairie on May 10. The bird was refound by other birders on the 11th and
also the 12th. Also seen there was a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. Bob Janssen
and Jerry Bonkoski reported on May 9 that the ROCK WREN has returned to
gravel pile # 6002 at Felton Prairie. That bird has been seen as
recently as May 12. They also found a LARK SPARROW at Buffalo River
State Park. A late DARK-EYED JUNCO was reported by Matt Mecklenburg at
the MSUM Science Center on May 8.
In Norman County , Bob and Jerry reported a PEREGRINE FALCON at the Gary
Pines. Peder Svingen found a ROSS'S GOOSE near Ada on May 12.
Bill Unzen found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the northeast corner of
Wadena County on May 6, and also reported two GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS

Cass County species reported by Bill included a calling YELLOW RAIL at
Swamp Lake; two AMERICAN AVOCETS, and 1 HUDSONIAN GODWIT at the
intersection of MN 64 and CR 24 in the southern part of the county. Also
seen in the county were COMMON TERN, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, a BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, and several species of warbler.
Warblers are starting to appear in Beltrami County also, as Pat DeWenter
reported CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, and BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER in Bemidji. She also mentioned COMMON LOON and a BARRED OWL. Pat
