To confirm what Jim Lind reported for us (Jeff Stephenson, Carol
Schumacher, Ben Fritchman, Mary Kroll, and myself), a Common Moorhen was
found in the portion of the Rum River State Forest which is located in
western Kanabec County.
>From Ogilvie, go north on Hwy 47 about 2.2 miles, then west on CR57 for
2 miles, then north on CR10 for 1.5 miles, then west on CR56 for
approximately 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Apple Street and go past the
cattail-filled pond you'll find on your right. When you see open water
on your right through some trees bordering the road, stop and look for
the Moorhen here. I don't know the exact mileage from CR56, but I would
guess it to be about 0.5 miles. If you go past this spot, you will
quickly come to a levee and be able to see much more of the water, but
I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the Moorhen from here, unless it
has moved.
Good luck!
