A few interesting birds while doing godwit and waterfowl surveys in NC and NW
MN:

Yellow Rail--one calling along Hwy 379 12 miles N of Walker at Swamp Lake
Common Goldeneye--brood of 8 at Walker Sewage Treatment Plant along 73st NW.
               Cute little munchkins!
Boreal Chickadee--one heard by Jim Kelley in a black spruce bog .7 mile west
of Boy River Bridge on Hwy 200, Cass County.
Least Bittern-one calling from a grassy section of a cattail marsh 1.7 miles
west of Mentor, Polk County on County Road 45. If you're heading west and
reach the obviously abandoned house on the north side of the road, turn back east
until you reach the first marsh (north side).
Evening Grosbeaks and a few siskins--present along route 113 in extreme
northern Becker County. 3,200 Cliff Swallows on Thursday morning at Thief River
Falls STP west of town. Lots of Wilson's Phalaropes and paired Northern Pintails
in some of the newly restored wetlands at Glacial Ridge NWR along Polk County
45 west of MN 32. This area is likely to become a major center of birding
activity as the restoration grows towards an intended 35,000 acres over the next
couple of decades. Oddest thing about the waterfowl survey we ran in the
Itasca State Park and White Earth reservation area was the species of waterfowl
most numerous on that particular day----Trumpter Swan!!! Nice going MN DNR.
Bob Russell, Dakota County
