[mou] Melanistic Hooded Merganser?

While unsuccessfully searching for the Barrow's
Goldeneye reported yesterday near MM 11, Hwy. 26,
Houston Co., I saw a weird duck. It appeared to be a
male Hooded Merganser with a black "hood" instead of
white trimmed by black, fully fanned out. Fred Lesher,
