My wife and I spent a weekend on the high bluffs overlooking DeSoto, WI. =
We saw several species including one that I didn't recognize at first. =
It wasn't until we saw a couple adult red headed woodpeckers that we =
realized the others were juveniles. They all had the prominant white =
wing patches. What caused me to wonder is that past sightings always =
involved single birds. On the bluff, we were seeing them on the gravel =
road, in the trees, flying alone or in small groups from tree to tree. =
In one 30 minute period, I counted 28 individuals, a few flying east to =
west, but most slowly moving down river from one bluff top to the next. =
I would estimate that at least 50 birds, mostly juveniles, moved across =
our bluff over a two day period. What an awesome sight
