This afternoon (Sept. 20) I scanned through a flock of three hundred or so
Canada Geese on the pond in Lakewood Cemetary. Was hoping last year's cackling
goose would oblige us again. Found two cacklers (and there may be more). If
you go to look for them, be aware the cemetary does close its gates towards
sunset or earlier. Check time at the gate. The two birds stuck close to each
other. There are at least three subspecies of the Canada goose here and some
are toward the small size, but these two stood out dramatically, with their
smaller size and short stubby bills. The flock will wander all over the
cemetery, and at times visit Lake Calhoun, so it may take some scouting to find
them. I did not do a thorough scan, so there may be other cackling geese
present, but at least there are two. Lakewood Cemetery is at 36th street and
Hennepin Ave. S. in Uptown Minneapolis.
