I fully agree that these individuals must and should be held fully
accountable for their malicious and senseless acts. However, punishment by
design is simply meant to halt aberant behavior, not correct it. I believe a
critical missing component is the imposition of some mandatory hands-on
education to retrain their hearts and minds. It was the absence of a healthy
moral conscience that allowed them to make the irresponsible decisions in
the first place. Somehow, these individuals must be taught to respect the
value of life God has placed under the hands of humanity to care for and
nuture. The absence of those values means nothing is there to countermand
future antisocial impulses, and it is highly likely they will become repeat
offenders. Sorry for my rambling, but those are my thoughts for what they
are worth.
