Hawk Ridge News
September 22, 2005

... BROAD-WINGED HAWKS still have time left for one last big push. The peak
numbers of “broadies” usually occur between September 10 and 25th. The
biggest numbers this past week occurred on Sunday the 18th, with 10,575
birds, 8,879 of which were Broad-winged Hawks. We’re starting to see more
adult SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS as the flight transitions from immatures to
adults. Right now the flight is about 50/50, but we should see a good push
of adults within the next two weeks.

… PEREGRINE! Oh, that’s one yell we love to hear, and we’re entering the
peak of Peregrine Falcons at Hawk Ridge. Thirteen of these amazing birds
were counted on Tuesday! We’re counting them almost every day, and counter
Frank Nicoletti saw one early one morning with a HUGE crop…he was amazed
that it was able to fly! Days with a light southerly wind are what we call
“Peregrine Days”. They apparently enjoy migrating against a light headwind.

… This weekend is HAWK WEEKEND! Speakers include Dr. Mark Fuller, a raptor
researcher from Idaho, and Al Batt, writer, birder, and humorist. Hawk
Ridge Bird Observatory’s second Annual Member Meeting will take place prior
to the Saturday evening program, and we’re raking in some wonderful items
for our silent auction fundraiser. See our website for details on the
event. Registration is available at the door: $17, $14.50 for members, $6
for students.
