This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, September 30,
2005 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Migration is picking up speed in the northwest, and the trees are fast
reaching peak colors. The next big rain and wind event will bring down
most of the leaves. Large flocks of common migrants like robins and
flickers are appearing on lawns throughout the area. Thursday, I saw a
large kettle of hawks whirling in the sky just west of Digi-key in Thief
River Falls. Since I was viewing them through the window without
binoculars at some distance, I cannot say what species they were.

The CAROLINA WREN that was reported earlier in the month at the feeder
of Pat and Cal Rice near Bemidji in Beltrami County is still there as of
Thursday, September 29. The bird has now molted into fresh plumage, and
looks much better than previously. You can reach Pat @ 218-751-0137 for
directions if you wish to see the bird.

In Otter Tail County, Dave Sorgen found a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS with
two cygnets at Cook's Lake on September 18. Other species seen in the
county within the last two weeks include COMMON LOON, TURKEY VULTURE,
OSPREY, BELTED KINGFISHER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER,
and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. Roland Jordahl reported WILD TURKEY, TURKEY
VULTURE, BALD EAGLE, EASTERN PHOEBE, and GRAY CATBIRD at Maplewood State
Park on September 27 . He also reported DARK-EYED JUNCO and HARRIS'S
SPARROW in his yard near Pelican Rapids.

>From Clay County, Ben Fritchman birded at the Moorhead wastewater
treatment ponds on September 23 where he found four CACKLING GEESE; at
the Sabin wastewater treatment ponds, he located one GREATER SCAUP,
REDHEADS, and WILSON'S SNIPE. There was a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in
Glyndon. To look for it go south at the light off US 10 over the tracks,
then take the first right, followed by another right at the first
corner. Look on the wires here. A Ringed Turtle-dove was also there at
the time.

Pat Rice reported YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, lots of
AMERICAN ROBINS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO in Beltrami County on
September 26. She had a secondhand report of a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER that
was seen by Doug Johnson along Lake Bemidji on September 25.Nathaniel
Emery in Polk County on September 28, reported that thousands of
AMERICAN COOTS have gathered at the Crookston wastewater treatment
ponds. Also there were GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, RUDDY
DUCK, PIED-BILLED GREBE, EARED GREBE, and GREATER YELLOWLEGS. HARRIS'S
SPARROW and DARK-EYED JUNCO were also seen in Polk County. Mike
Christopherson reported a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in Crookston on
September 28.

On the weekend, in rural Pennington County, I had WOOD DUCK,
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, FOX SPARROW,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO at the
feeder; at Greenwood Park in Thief River Falls, I added YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
YELLOW WARBLER, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Shelley Steva reported six
warbler species in her yard on September 25. They were TENNESSEE
WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and best of all a CONNECTICUT WARBLER.
Elsewhere in Pennington County, she saw a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK on
September 25.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County, reported that the AMERICAN CROWS are
gathering in flocks. He also reported 18 GREAT BLUE HERONS, two GREAT
EGRETS, a WILD TURKEY with young, SORA, 34 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SEDGE
WREN, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and PINE SISKIN.

Thanks to Ben Fritchman, Larry Wilebski, Dave Sorgen, Shelley Steva, Pat
Rice, Roland Jordahl, Nathaniel Emery, and Mike Christopherson for their
reports.
