This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, August 4,

The recent hot weather seems to have quieted the people and the birds
this week. A small part of the area did get rain during the week, but
much of the region still remains in a drought condition.
Pat Rice in Beltrami County reported two adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS,
and one immature at Diamond Point Park in Bemidji on August 2.
At Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County, two GREAT EGRETS
were seen along CR 7 at Headquarters Pool on August 3. Last weekend's
shorebird survey yielded slightly fewer birds than the week before, but
there was still good diversity. As of August 3, there was still
shorebird habitat along the county road, and edges are starting to
appear there at Parker Pool and Farmes Pool.
On July 29 in Pennington County, a female NORTHERN HARRIER took more
than a passing interest in me, as I scanned for shorebirds at the Thief
River Falls wastewater treatment ponds. The pair seems to be defending
the eastern dike of the southernmost cell. About 30 shorebirds were
found there also including LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and
LEAST SANDPIPER.
Thaddeus McCamant reported a pair of COMMON MOORHENS in Otter Tail
County this week. He saw a pair of adults and several young two weeks
ago, and this week one adult with two young. Location is the junction of
CR 8 and CR 67 where the two roads run together for a half mile, on the
east side of the road.
